The 1960s UG Compax, Tri Compax & Uni Compax Chronos
In the 1964 Universal Geneve came out with a series of 36mm chronographs that were ahead of their time, with a unique design and style ethos combining sophistication, coolness and elegance. This website covers this small series of ten chronographs which ran until the early 1970s when the influence of more vivid colours and striking designs were witnessed on the exotic dial variants. The 885103/02 Compax was worn by Nina Rindt and the 881101/01 by Eric Clapton, hence their often used nicknames, with their black dial counterparts named "Evil Nina" and "Evil Clapton" by todays collectors. These watches were premium priced back in the 1960s and were built beautifully using high quality parts including the famous Valjoux 72 and the complex Martel Cal281 with Breguet hairspring.
